Different Acne Scar Remedies

What is an Acne Scar?

To understand acne scar remedies, we must know more about acne scars. Acne is formed when foreign material irritates the pores of the skin. Scars are the skin’s protective mechanism when acne becomes wounded. An acne scar looks different from normal skin surrounding it. This is why people dislike having an acne scar, and they seek acne scar remedies. An acne scar may have different appearances, but they may be grouped to three general types. Each type may respond to different acne scar remedies.

Types of Acne Scars and Suitable Acne Scar Remedies

Hypertrophic acne scars. These are raised acne scars that look thick. These scars are distinguished from other types of acne scars because they look like bumps on the skin. These are formed when the skin makes a substance called collagen to protect the wound. Acne scar remedies are those that level out the scar.

Atrophic acne scars. These scars are flat and they may lie close to the skin. These kinds of acne scars occur when the skin becomes damaged and loses its natural elasticity. As a result, atrophic acne scars are floppy and they don’t have structure. Acne scar remedies for these are those that make them similar to the neighboring skin.

Ice pick acne scars. These acne scars looks like holes on the skin. This happens when the acne wound is deep and there is much damage to the skin. These are commonly found in people who pick on their acne. Acne scar remedies for pitted scars are those that fill the scar.

Options for Acne Scar Remedies

There are different kinds of acne scar remedies. Not all of these remedies for acne scars are effective for certain types of acne scars. Consult a dermatologist for the best acne scar remedies to the kind of acne scars that you have. Ask your dermatologist your questions about acne scar remedies. Here is a short explanation on how to treat acne.

Surgical alterations as acne scar remedies. Some acne scar remedies may involve surgery. The appearance of a scar may be altered through surgery. Surgery makes it possible to move a scar to another position or change its shape. However, the scar may not be totally removed, because a scar involves many layers of skin. It’s also possible that surgery will make the scar bigger though generally, the scar is improved. Caution is advised with this option because surgery may cause the scar to worsen, but it may be an effective treatment for some kinds of acne scars.

Subcisions as acne scar remedies. This is included among the surgical acne scar remedies. With subcision, small incisions are done under the scar in order to make the scar tissue sink and be covered with normal skin. Surgical acne scar remedies require anesthesia to eliminate pain.

Skin grafting for acne scar remedies. This is another type of surgical acne scar remedies. This involves acne scar removal, and attaching on the wound created a piece of skin from another part of the body. This skin grows on the wound and becomes normal skin.

Laser surgery. Because this is similar to surgery, it may not entirely remove the scar, but it can improve the scar’s appearance.  A laser may normalize the color of a scar. A laser can also remove the upper layers of the skin so that the scar shrinks in size. Repeated laser treatment is necessary especially with extensive acne scarring.

Laser resurfacing for acne and scars. This type of laser is different from the one used with surgery. The laser used with laser resurfacing doesn’t destroy skin. Instead, it harmlessly penetrates the outer layer of the skin and stimulates the cells beneath the scar to grow. This causes the new skin to replace the old skin with the scar tissue, thus only scar-free skin is left.

Steroid injections. Steroids help scar tissue become softer and smaller. It helps make the skin regain its normal appearance. A steroid medication is given to the scar via injection. Care must be observed so that the drug doesn’t enter the blood, because it may cause untoward side effects. A licensed medical practitioner administers the injections every month until the scars flatten.

Collagen injections. This is used with ice pick scars and atrophic scars. These fill up acne scars that are set deeper than the surrounding level of skin. This is short lasting and a collagen injection treatment is repeated. This is contraindicated to those who are allergic to collagen injections.

Radiotherapies for acne scar remedies. This prevents the formation of hypertrophic acne scars. Radiotherapy inhibits the multiplication of scar cells. According to studies, it’s very effective but it’s only done for serious acne scarring. Radiotherapy may also interfere with the growth of normal cells and cause side effects.

Cryotherapies for acne scar remedies. In this procedure, liquid nitrogen is used to freeze the scar and make them easier to be removed. This is not highly effective, and is commonly used only on the back or shoulders. This is used for elevated hypertrophic acne scars, and not on sunken acne scars which are harder to remove via freezing.

Dermabrasion as acne scar remedies. After using a general anesthetic, equipment is used to remove the skin’s surface so that the scars may be removed. This is only effective for hypertrophic scars. Ice pick acne scars and atrophic scars may still remain after dermabrasion, but their appearance may be minimized.

Skin peelings as acne scar remedies. A chemical peel is used to make the outer layer of the skin peel off, revealing the smooth skin underneath. The chemical peel is followed by a treatment to moisturize and care for the skin to prevent the skin from being damaged.

Liposuction as acne scar remedies. This medical procedure is commonly done for weight maintenance, but this may be done for acne scars as well. Small amounts of body fat are removed from under the skin surrounding a pitted acne scar. This is done to make the sunken scar become even with the surrounding skin.

Silicone Gel Sheet coverings. These are placed over the scars to moisturize and flatten them. These are used for at least 2 months until the severity of the acne scars are reduced.

Topical applications for acne scar remedies. Creams like those enriched with Vitamin E helps in repairing damaged skin cells. This is applied on the scar daily to help regain its former appearance. The effectiveness of vitamin E creams to directly treat acne scars is not yet determined, though it makes it easier for the skin to heal without excessive scarring.  There are ointments that kill bacteria that worsen the scars. If you plan to use medications for scars, consult your doctor first.

Skin bleaching. Scars and other darkening of skin caused by hyperpigmentation may be improved by substances and skin products that whiten them. Lemon juice and olive oil may be applied with a cotton ball to the scars to make them appear lighter and more normal.

Cover ups as acne scar remedies. Acne scars may be visually removed with the use of make-up and other cosmetics. Color may be applied over the acne scars to make it look normal. The make-up that is used must be hypoallergenic to prevent worsening the acne scar. If you’re in a dirty environment, you may wear a facemask. Acne scars on the body may be hidden with clothing. Clothing used to cover acne scars must be clean and non-irritating.
